9 Things to Do When You Can't Sleep
Summary: When sleep eludes you, it can be frustrating? Why not use that time to get something accomplished? Here are some ideas for what to do when you can´t sleep.
If you’ve ever experienced a sleep problem, you know how frustrating it can be. The harder you try to make sleep come, the more sleep eludes you. Instead of counting sheep, sometimes the best way to handle persistent sleeplessness is to stop fighting it. There are lots of things you can do to make good use of your unplanned wake time. Here are some suggestions:
1. Test your knowledge of trivia. Did you know you can play Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit online? Just head over to their websites and you can have a game going in minutes. You can even compete with other insomniacs who are using their sleep time to play trivia games.
2. Take a hot, fragrant bath. Now is a great time to draw a long, soothing tub of warm bath water. Add some bath oil or fragrant bath salts to your bath and cushion your head with a pillow. Make the mood even more relaxing by adding some new age music. Just make sure you don´t fall asleep in the bathtub and drown.
3. Watch old television reruns. Do you have a television station in your area that runs those old late night T.V. reruns like All in the Family, I Love Lucy, and Gilligan´s Island? These T.V. characters are guaranteed to make you forget about your inability to sleep. You´ll laugh so hard that sleep will be an afterthought.
4. Make a list for tomorrow. Did you know you can make a list online? There are various websites that allow you to do this and store your list online to be updated regularly. After you complete the list, you can email it to yourself and congratulate yourself on having the upcoming day planned. You may be tired the next day but at least you’ll be organized.
5. Clean out the refrigerator. This is one of those jobs that you never find time to do. At 3:00 A.M., you can do it without anyone disturbing you. Your kids won´t be running in and out of the kitchen and, hopefully, your dog will be asleep and won´t be parked by the refrigerator begging for a bite of whatever happens to emerge from your overcrowded refrigerator. In the morning, you´ll feel good about yourself because you got a difficult task accomplished.
6. Read a book online. There are tons of classic books in the public domain you can read online for free. Just do an online search for “public domain ebooks” and “free ebooks”. You’ll find lots of interesting reading material to fill your sleepless hours.
7. Take a midnight walk. Only do this if you live in a safe neighborhood. Be sure to wear reflective apparel and carry a flashlight. That being said, it can be enormously relaxing taking a stroll in the middle of the night when everyone else is asleep. Take a deep breath and drink in the crisp night air, now that it´s not contaminated with auto exhaust fumes.
8. Write a letter. Is there someone you haven´t contacted in a long time due to time constraints? Get out a pen and pad and write a good, old fashioned letter to them. Some of your best writing can be done in the wee hours of the morning when you´re undisturbed by career and family pressures. Just be sure to read it the next morning before you send it. Sometimes your nighttime thinking can make absolutely no sense in the morning.
9. Try your hand at creative writing. Some of your most creative thoughts may come late at night when you can´t sleep or in.
